Why Are Home Fitness Programmes Such A Popular Choice?

Posted on 05 May 2010 by Nicky Williams

Most people are considerably more health conscious these days than they were just a few short years ago. People realise the importance of taking regular light exercise and are generally more aware of the benefits of a healthy and well balanced diet. Of course, being aware that you should do something and actually getting around to doing it are two very different things.

It’s all too easy to succumb to the temptation of food that isn’t good for you. As a rule, junk food is cheaper, more readily available and, let’s be honest, tasty and tempting. Likewise, taking exercise can be something that is difficult to summon up the motivation for. Many people don’t want to visit the gym. They might be a little self conscious – or they might just find it difficult to make the time. The idea of pounding the pavement in the cold and the rain can be equally unappealing.

These are just some of the reasons why the home exercise market is so successful. Some people are happy to pay hundreds of dollars for home exercise equipment. Others, the majority in all probability, will tend to buy exercise DVDs and workout in front of the TV.

A recent addition to the home exercise market has been the Nintendo Wii console – by means of the Wii Fit program. This lets users exercise and monitor their progress using the Wii’s motion sensitive control technology and the Wii balance board. A black Wii console – which might match the other items in the average family living room better than the original white version – is even available now.

Getting your workout in the comfortable and familiar environment of your own living room has several advantages. You can give the gym a miss, you don’t need to get cold and damp and you should find it easier to manage to fit your exercise routine into your daily schedule. You will need to make sure that you keep yourself motivated and take exercise on a regular basis. Some method of recording and monitoring your progress can be useful for this – whether you use the Wii as an electronic personal trainer or opt for something simpler such as a training diary.

If you decide to go down the road of investing in exercise equipment – a treadmill, a rowing machine, an exercise bike or a Wii – then do be sure to get yourself good quality apparatus. The savings you make on gym membership fees will mean that you will soon recover the initial cost – as long as you exercise regularly.

Have a look at the black Wii for yourself and see how it measures up against the latest slim version of Sony’s PS3 game console.
